About This Journey
The Shondesh Shakti Peeth is identified with the Narmada Udgam temple at the Narmada Kund in Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh, where the Narmada rises. Tradition holds that Sati's right buttock fell here. The goddess is Narmada, with Bhadrasen as her Bhairava. The kund is ringed by white temples. Pilgrims begin the Narmada Parikrama here, walking the length of the river and back. The walk takes many months. This three-day journey starts at Jabalpur airport, about 230 km and five to six hours away. Day 1 is the drive. Day 2 is darshan at the Narmada Kund and the Kalachuri-era temples beside it. It also covers Sonmuda, source of the Son and site of the Kalmadhav pitha. Day 3 is the drive back. Winters are cold here at about 1,050 m.
