About This Journey
The Ramgiri Shakti Peeth, where tradition says Sati's right breast fell, is placed by some at Chitrakoot. Many pilgrims identify it with Maihar in Madhya Pradesh. At Maihar the goddess Sharda sits on Trikuta hill, reached by about 1,000 steps or a ropeway. Local legend holds that the warrior Alha, of the Alha-Udal ballads, still offers the first worship each morning. The Tantra lists name the goddess Shivani, with Chanda as her Bhairava. This two-day journey starts at Jabalpur airport, about 160 km and four hours away. Day 1 is the drive and evening darshan by ropeway. Day 2 starts with the climb on foot for those who can manage it. The steps are steep. Then you drive back. Maihar is also home to the Maihar gharana of music. Maihar station is on the main Mumbai-Howrah line.
