About This Journey
The Jayadurga Shakti Peeth lies inside the Baba Baidyanath Dham complex in Deoghar, Jharkhand. Tradition holds that Sati's heart fell here, which is why the site is also called Hridaya Peeth. The goddess is Jayadurga, with Vaidyanath, the Jyotirlinga, as her Bhairava. Her shrine faces Shiva's, and the two spires are tied together with red cloth. Couples tie a thread between them in the gathbandhan ritual, asking blessings for their marriage. This two-day journey starts at Deoghar airport, about 12 km away. Day 1 is darshan at both shrines and the evening shringar puja. Day 2 covers Basukinath, about 45 km away, before the drive back. In Shravan, lakhs of kanwariyas carry Ganga water here on foot from Sultanganj. Expect long queues then.
