About This Temple

The Kankalitala Shakti Peeth stands on the Kopai river, about 9 km from Bolpur in Birbhum district, West Bengal. Tradition holds that Sati's waist, her kankal or bones, fell here. There is no carved image. A sacred pond beside the temple is believed to hold the relic under its water. Devotees make offerings at the pond's edge. The goddess is Devagarbha, with Ruru as her Bhairava.
