About This Temple
Shri Mahakaleshwar stands beside the Rudra Sagar lake in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, close to the Shipra river. It is the only south-facing Jyotirlinga. In Shaiva tradition the south belongs to death, and Mahakal is worshipped as its master. The linga sits in a sanctum below ground. The Omkareshwar and Nagchandreshwar shrines stand on the floors above. The Nagchandreshwar shrine opens only on Nag Panchami.
