15-Day Northeast India Backpacking Itinerary

Fifteen days is where the Northeast actually starts to open up. Under two weeks, you're sampling. At fifteen days and a genuine backpacker's budget, you're covering Assam, Meghalaya, and either Arunachal or Nagaland with enough time to actually sit with a place instead of just photographing it.

This is the itinerary for travellers who've decided the Northeast deserves more than a rushed week — who are comfortable with shared Sumos over private cabs, homestays over hotels, and the specific kind of patience this region demands in exchange for genuinely extraordinary access.

The Route

GUWAHATI → SHILLONG → CHERRAPUNJI → DAWKI/
MAWLYNNONG → KAZIRANGA → MAJULI → ARUNACHAL
PRADESH (Bomdila/Tawang) → back to GUWAHATI

Day 1-2: Guwahati (Kamakhya Temple, Assam State Museum)
Day 3-4: Shillong (Umiam Lake, Elephant Falls, viewpoints)
Day 5-6: Cherrapunji (Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Caves, Dawki river)
Day 7-8: Kaziranga National Park (safari, wildlife)
Day 9-10: Majuli (river island, Vaishnavite satras)
Day 11-13: Arunachal Pradesh (Bomdila → Tawang Monastery,
           via Sela Pass)
Day 14: Buffer day / return journey from Tawang
Day 15: Guwahati departure

(Alternative for Day 11-13: swap Arunachal for Nagaland — Kohima and the Angami villages, particularly rewarding if timed around the Hornbill Festival in early December.)

The Budget-Conscious Version, Stop by Stop

Guwahati and Assam Base (Days 1-2)

Kaziranga safaris run approximately ₹1,500 per person for a shared jeep — considerably cheaper than a private safari, and a genuine backpacker staple. Guwahati is the main hub, with flights from all major Indian cities and shared Sumos, buses, and local taxis covering everything from here outward.

Shillong and Cherrapunji (Days 3-6)

This is where the region's homestay culture genuinely shines for backpackers. Homestays in Mawlynnong run approximately ₹600-900 per night including meals — remarkable value, and considerably more authentic than a hotel. Dorms and hostels are still limited in the Northeast overall, but growing steadily in Shillong and Guwahati, with dorm beds available at ₹400-700.

Majuli (Days 9-10)

Ferries to Majuli cost just ₹20-50 — one of the cheapest, most memorable transport experiences on the entire itinerary. The island's homestay scene is genuine and inexpensive, and the satras here offer a cultural depth most backpackers rushing through a standard 7-day loop never encounter.

Arunachal Pradesh — Bomdila to Tawang (Days 11-13)

This leg requires the most planning: an Inner Line Permit (processed in advance, ideally through a local agency given the lead time involved), warm clothing regardless of season, and genuine patience with road conditions — particularly around the Sela Pass, which crosses at 4,170 metres and can close unpredictably. Nagaland homestays for the alternative route range from ₹1,500-2,500 for basic but genuinely comfortable local stays, rising to ₹3,000-6,000 for well-run heritage or festival-season properties.

Realistic 15-Day Backpacking Budget

Category Backpacker Budget (per day) 15-Day Total
Accommodation (dorms/homestays) ₹400-1,500 ₹6,000-22,500
Food ₹400-700 ₹6,000-10,500
Local transport (shared Sumos/buses) ₹500-1,500 ₹7,500-22,500
Permits (ILP, misc.) ₹300-600 total
Activities (safari, ferry, entries) Variable ₹5,000-8,000 total
Total (excl. flights) ₹28,000-45,000

This range sits meaningfully below the ₹90,000+ figure that longer, more comfort-oriented multi-state trips can reach — the difference comes almost entirely from accommodation choice (homestays and dorms over hotels) and transport (shared Sumos over private vehicles).

The Backpacker's Practical Checklist

  • Carry your ID and extra photocopies — checkpoints and permit verification happen more frequently than in most of India, particularly heading into Arunachal

  • Download offline maps before you leave network coverage — significant stretches, especially in Arunachal and North Sikkim-adjacent routes, have no signal at all

  • Respect tribal customs and local dress codes, particularly in Nagaland's villages and any active monastery in Arunachal or Sikkim

  • Pack genuinely warm clothes for Arunachal, even if the rest of your trip has been in Assam's heat — the temperature swing between Guwahati and Tawang can exceed 25°C within 48 hours

  • Carry cash — ATMs are sparse in remote areas, and many homestays and local transport options don't take cards

  • Book festival-timed stops well ahead — Hornbill Festival (Nagaland, Dec 1-10) and Ziro Festival accommodation sells out weeks in advance

Why 15 Days Changes the Character of the Trip

The difference between a 7-day loop and a proper 15-day backpacking circuit isn't just more places — it's a genuinely different relationship with the region. Fifteen days allows for the kind of unhurried immersion Sikkim's own tourism messaging actively promotes: choosing quality over quantity, spending real time in a single small town rather than constantly driving, absorbing local life instead of just photographing landmarks.

It also means you can actually recover from the harder days — the Nongriat root bridge trek, the long Bomdila-to-Tawang drive over Sela Pass — with genuine rest days built in, rather than stacking demanding activity on demanding activity across a compressed week.

Bringing Structure to an Independent Trip

Backpacking doesn't have to mean fully improvised — and for the Arunachal or Nagaland legs specifically, where permits, road conditions, and accommodation availability genuinely benefit from local coordination, a hybrid approach works well: independent, budget-conscious travel for the Assam-Meghalaya portion, with permit processing and the more logistically demanding Arunachal or Nagaland leg coordinated in advance.

HRDYAM's Northeast India trip planning can support exactly this hybrid structure — handling Inner Line Permit processing, arranging reliable transport for the Sela Pass crossing, and confirming homestay or budget accommodation ahead of arrival, while leaving the day-to-day pace and spontaneity of a genuine backpacking trip intact.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, as outlined in this itinerary — though it moves at a genuinely full pace. Travellers wanting more relaxed time in each location, or wanting to add Nagaland on top of Arunachal rather than choosing between them, should consider extending to 18-20 days.

The direct administrative fee is low — typically ₹50-100 — but processing through an agency that bundles it with transport coordination is strongly recommended given the remoteness of the Tawang region. Apply at least 2-3 weeks ahead of your Arunachal leg to avoid any risk of delay affecting your itinerary.

Mostly homestays. Dormitory-style hostel accommodation remains limited across the Northeast — hotels and homestays are considerably more common. Shillong and Guwahati have the region's best-developed hostel scenes; beyond these two cities, budget accommodation means homestays, government tourist lodges, or basic guesthouses rather than dorm-style hostels.

Both work well. Solo backpackers will find Guwahati and Gangtok-equivalent hubs (Shillong specifically) genuinely easy and safe to navigate independently, with plenty of fellow travellers around. The Arunachal leg specifically benefits from either joining a small group tour for that portion or coordinating transport in advance, given the remoteness and permit requirements.

The Bomdila-to-Tawang leg via Sela Pass, without question — both for the road conditions and the altitude/weather variability. Building at least one buffer day around this stretch, rather than a tight back-to-back schedule, is strongly advisable.

It depends on timing and interest. If your trip falls in early December, Nagaland's Hornbill Festival is a genuinely unique, once-a-year cultural experience worth prioritising. Outside that window, Arunachal's Tawang Monastery — the largest in India — offers a depth of Buddhist heritage and Himalayan scenery that most backpackers rate as the single most memorable stretch of a Northeast trip.
