About This Journey
The Tripura Sundari Shakti Peeth, known locally as Matabari, stands on a small hill at Udaipur in Gomati district, Tripura. Tradition holds that Sati's right foot fell here. The hill is said to be shaped like a tortoise's back, which gives the site the name Kurma Peeth. The temple was built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya. The goddess is Tripura Sundari, with Tripuresh as her Bhairava. Beside it lies Kalyan Sagar, a lake known for its large turtles. Feeding them is a local custom. This two-day journey starts at Agartala airport, about 55 km away, with the night in Agartala. Day 1 covers Ujjayanta Palace and Neermahal, the lake palace at Melaghar. Day 2 is darshan at Matabari and the lake before your flight. The Diwali fair here draws pilgrims from across the Northeast.
