About This Journey
Nandikeshwari Temple stands in the town of Sainthia in Birbhum district, West Bengal, beside a large banyan tree. Tradition holds that Sati's necklace fell here. The goddess is Nandini, with Nandikeshwar as her Bhairava. The Nandikeshwari Shakti Peeth is one of five in Birbhum and among the easiest to reach. It is a short walk from Sainthia Junction railway station. The shrine is small. This two-day journey starts at Kolkata airport, about 200 km and five hours away, with the night in Bolpur (Shantiniketan). Day 1 is the drive. Day 2 covers Nandikeshwari and Bakreshwar, about 40 km away, known for its hot springs. Then you drive back to Kolkata. With a third day, you can cover all five Birbhum pithas: Nandikeshwari, Bakreshwar, Nalhati, Attahas and Kankalitala.
