About This Journey
Nalhateswari Temple stands on a low hill at Nalhati in Birbhum district, West Bengal. Tradition holds that Sati's nala, the pipe of the throat, fell here, though some accounts name the stomach. The goddess is Kalika, with Yogesh as her Bhairava. The Nalhateswari Shakti Peeth is about 2 km from Nalhati Junction. Tarapith, a major Tara temple and a centre of tantric practice, is about 20 km away. This two-day journey starts at Kolkata airport, about 240 km and six hours away. Most pilgrims stay at Tarapith or Rampurhat. Day 1 is the drive and evening darshan at Tarapith. Day 2 is Nalhateswari in the morning before the long drive back. The train from Howrah or Sealdah to Rampurhat is often faster than the road.
