About This Journey
Maa Kamakhya Temple stands on Nilachal Hill above the Brahmaputra in Guwahati, Assam. Tradition holds that Sati's yoni fell here. The Kamakhya Shakti Peeth is often called the most important of the 51 for Shakti and tantric worship. There is no idol. The sanctum is a cave chamber below ground, where a natural stone yoni is kept moist by an underground spring. The goddess is Kamakhya, with Umananda as her Bhairava, worshipped on a river island below. This two-day journey starts at Guwahati airport, about 20 km away. Day 1 is darshan at Kamakhya and the Dasa Mahavidya shrines on the hill. Day 2 is the ferry to Umananda and the Brahmaputra riverfront. The temple closes for three days during the Ambubachi Mela in June.
