About This Journey
Jwalamukhi Temple stands in the town of Jwalamukhi in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. Tradition holds that Sati's tongue fell here. There is no idol. The goddess is worshipped as small flames that burn from cracks in the rock inside the sanctum, fed by natural gas seeping through. The goddess is Siddhida (Ambika), with Unmatta as her Bhairava. A story told at the Jwalamukhi Shakti Peeth says the Mughal emperor Akbar tried to put the flames out and later offered a gold canopy. This two-day journey starts at Kangra airport at Gaggal, about 50 km away. Day 1 is the drive and evening aarti. Day 2 covers Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra and Chamunda Devi before the drive back. The aarti is held five times a day.
