About This Journey
The Jayanti Shakti Peeth is identified in India with the Durga temple at Nartiang in West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. Tradition holds that Sati's left thigh fell here. A rival claim places it at Jaintiapur, across the border in Sylhet, Bangladesh. The goddess is Jayanti, with Kramadishwar as her Bhairava. The Nartiang temple was a shrine of the Jaintia kings. Durga Puja here blends Hindu and local Pnar practice. Nearby stands the Nartiang monolith garden, with standing stones up to about 8 m tall. This two-day journey starts at Guwahati airport, about 165 km and five hours away, with the night in Shillong. Day 1 is the drive to Shillong. Day 2 is the 65 km drive to Nartiang for darshan and the monoliths, then back to Guwahati. It is a long second day.
