About This Journey
Bhimashankar Temple sits in the Sahyadri hills of Pune district, Maharashtra, near the source of the Bhima river. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The temple is built in the Nagara style, and its hall was added in the 18th century by Nana Phadnavis. It lies inside the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary protects the Indian giant squirrel, Maharashtra's state animal. This Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga darshan package starts at Pune airport, about 110 km and three hours away on a winding hill road. Day 1 is the drive up and afternoon darshan. The temple sits below the car park, down a long flight of steps. Day 2 is a morning walk to Gupt Bhimashankar before the drive back. Hotels near the temple are basic.
