About This Journey
Bakreshwar, in Birbhum district, West Bengal, holds both a Shiva temple and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Tradition holds that the point between Sati's eyebrows fell here. The goddess is Mahishamardini, with Vakranath as her Bhairava. The site is known for its hot springs. Several lie in a row beside the temples, with names such as Agni Kund and Surya Kund. Tradition links the name to the sage Ashtavakra. The Bakreshwar Shakti Peeth draws large crowds at Shivaratri. This two-day journey starts at Kolkata airport, about 230 km and six hours away, with the night in Bolpur (Shantiniketan) or Suri. Day 1 is the drive. Day 2 is darshan and a dip in the springs, then Nandikeshwari at Sainthia on the way back. Some springs are very hot. Test the water first.
