Kamakhya Temple

Dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya

Kamakhya is closely associated with Tantric traditions and the worship of the yoni, which is regarded as a powerful symbol of feminine energy. According to Hindu belief, Maa Sati's womb fell at this sacred site, making it one of the most important centers of Shakti worship in India. Goddess Kamakhya is also known as Kamarupa or Kamarupini, which means the goddess of desires. She is believed to exist at Kamakhya both as a virgin goddess and as the consort of Lord Shiva. She is worshipped in many forms, or rupas. In her Sambhoga form, she is associated with Kama and is therefore known as Kamakhya. She is believed to be the source of all desires and the one who fulfills the wishes of her devotees. It is said that the Goddess is especially powerful during Ambubachi, and those who pray with a pure mind and heart may have their wishes fulfilled. The origin of the Kamakhya Temple is believed by many to have pre-Aryan and tribal influences in its rituals and traditions. Religious texts also tell the story of the original temple being built by Kamdev after he regained his beauty at this sacred place. With the help of Bishwakarma, the temple was believed to be a grand structure, possibly much larger than the present temple. From a historical point of view, the temple is believed to have gained importance during the reign of King Naraka, who is considered one of the earliest rulers of the Brahmaputra Valley. However, there are very few written or historical records about the temple being supported by his successors. Its history remained unclear until the rise of the Koch Kingdom in the middle of the 16th century. There is also a popular belief that devotees who come from outside and visit Kamakhya Temple three times in their lifetime can attain freedom from worldly attachments and the cycle of birth and death. या देवी सर्व भूतेषू मातृ रूपेण संस्थिता नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम: । Kamakhya is known around the world as a powerful Siddha Peeth and an important center of Shakti worship. According to beliefs mentioned in Devi Granth, Kulavarna Tantra, and Mahabhagavata Purana, a devotee who brings holy water from the Ganga and offers it at this sacred Shakti Peeth and then pours some of that water into the Brahmaputra River is believed to receive spiritual blessings similar to those of performing a Vajapeya Yajna. The temple is believed to have always been a powerful spiritual center connected with divine energies. According to a popular legend, the demon king Narakasura became determined to marry Maa Bhagwati Kamakhya. Maa Kamakhya agreed to his request on one condition. She asked him to build four stone pathways around Nilachal Hill and also construct a resting place near the Kamakhya Temple, all within a single night. Filled with pride, Narakasura almost completed the task before sunrise. While he was still finishing the resting place, Maa Kamakhya used her divine power to create the sound of a rooster. Narakasura believed that morning had arrived and that he had failed to complete the task in time. Angered by this, Narakasura chased the rooster and killed it on the other side of the Brahmaputra River. The place is still believed to be known as Kukatachaki. Later, according to the legend, Lord Vishnu killed Narakasura. After his death, his son Bhagadatta became the ruler of Kamarupa. After the evil actions of Narakasura and due to the curse of a great sage, the goddess is believed to have disappeared from the site. The Kamakhya Temple, which was believed to have been established by Kamdev, gradually fell into ruins. According to Hindu mythology, when Goddess Sati gave up her body through her yogic powers, Lord Shiva carried her body across the universe in grief. To restore balance, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to divide her body into different parts. According to tradition, the yoni, or womb, of Goddess Sati fell on Nilachal Hill. This sacred place later came to be worshipped as the seat of Goddess Kamakhya. The yoni is seen as a symbol of birth, creation, and the origin of life. It is believed to represent the place from which new life enters the world. For this reason, devotees worship the sacred form of the Goddess at Kamakhya as a symbol of feminine energy, creation, and the source of life. Just as every human being is born from the womb of their mother, devotees believe that the entire creation originated from the divine feminine power represented by Goddess Sati and Maa Kamakhya. Ambubachi: When Mother Earth Menstruates According to traditional belief, Maa Bhagwati undergoes her annual menstruation during the sacred period of Ambubachi. It is believed that during these three days, the sacred water flowing from the Mahamudra or Yoni Tirtha inside the garbhagriha changes in color. During this period, many devotees, tantric practitioners, and spiritual seekers gather at Kamakhya. Ambubachi is considered an important time for spiritual practices, mantra sadhana, and worship. After the three days are completed, special पूजा and rituals are performed to mark the end of the period. The time during which the goddess is believed to menstruate is known as Ambubachi. According to tradition, Mother Earth, or the Supreme Mother, is also believed to undergo menstruation during this period. For this reason, the Kamakhya Temple remains closed for three days. After the period is completed, the goddess is traditionally worshipped and adorned with red garments. Offerings of fruits and flowers are also made. Ambubachi is seen as a time of rest and renewal for the Mother Goddess. The festival also marks the beginning of the monsoon season, which brings relief to Mother Earth and all living beings after the intense summer heat. According to the Hindu calendar, Ambubachi usually begins around the seventh day of the Ashadha month. The traditional belief behind this festival is connected with fertility and the life-giving power of Mother Earth. Just as a woman gives birth and nurtures life, Mother Earth gives life by growing crops and supporting all living beings. For this reason, Ambubachi represents fertility, creation, and the deep connection between nature and feminine energy. The Kamakhya Temple holds special importance during Ambubachi because Hindu mythology associates this sacred place with the spot where Devi Sati's yoni or womb is believed to have fallen. When Kamakhya Turns Red There is a widely held belief that red-colored water flows from the sacred yoni at Kamakhya during the period of Ambubachi. During these three days, the temple doors remain closed, and regular worship does not take place. On the fourth day, special rituals are performed, and after the ceremonial worship of the Goddess, the temple doors are reopened for devotees. Another important belief connected with Ambubachi is the red cloth associated with the Mother Goddess during this period. Devotees consider this cloth highly auspicious and believe that receiving a piece of it brings the blessings of Maa Kamakhya and helps fulfill their wishes. Red: The Color of Shakti The color red is deeply connected with Shakti and feminine divine energy. It represents Rajas guna, fertility, creation, and the power of life. The Supreme Goddess is traditionally associated with the color red and is adorned in red garments during Ambubachi. For devotees, the red cloth associated with Maa Kamakhya is considered sacred and spiritually significant. It represents feminine divine energy, fertility, creation, and the power of Shakti. These beliefs and traditions are an important part of the spiritual significance of Kamakhya Temple darshan and the worship of Maa Kamakhya.
