About This Temple
Kalighat Kali Temple stands on the Adi Ganga, an old channel of the Hooghly, in south Kolkata. Tradition holds that the toes of Sati's right foot fell here. The goddess is Kalika, with Nakulish as her Bhairava. The present temple dates from 1809. The image of Kali has three large eyes, four gold hands and a long gold tongue. By one common account, the Kalighat Shakti Peeth gave Kolkata its name.
