About This Temple

The Panchsagar Shakti Peeth, where tradition says Sati's lower teeth fell, has no single agreed site. Older lists place it near Varanasi. Another tradition identifies it with the Maa Barahi temple at Devidhura in Champawat district, Uttarakhand. There the goddess is Varahi, with Maharudra as her Bhairava. Devidhura sits high in the pine forests of the Kumaon hills. It is known for the Bagwal, held on Raksha Bandhan, when rival groups exchange a ritual volley of stones and fruit before the goddess.
