About This Temple

Vishalakshi Temple stands in the lanes behind Mir Ghat in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, a few minutes' walk from Kashi Vishwanath. Tradition holds that Sati's earring, or in some accounts her eye, fell here. The goddess is Vishalakshi, the wide-eyed one, with Kal Bhairav as her Bhairava. The Rudrayamala names the Vishalakshi Shakti Peeth among its principal pithas. Worship here follows South Indian practice. Many pilgrims from Tamil Nadu visit it together with Kashi Vishwanath.
