Dedicated to Goddess Indrakshi
- Nainativu, Sri Lanka
About This Temple
The Lanka Shakti Peeth, where tradition says Sati's anklets fell, is identified by Tamil Hindus with the Nagapooshani Amman Temple on Nainativu. The island lies off the Jaffna peninsula in northern Sri Lanka. The goddess is Indrakshi, with Rakshaseshwar as her Bhairava. Another tradition links the pitha with Trincomalee, where Shankari Devi is worshipped near Koneswaram. The island is small. Nainativu also holds a Buddhist shrine, Nagadipa Vihara. Indian visitors must follow Sri Lanka's current visa or travel authorisation rules. Jaffna airport has flights from Chennai. From Jaffna you drive about 35 km to Kurikadduwan jetty, then take the ferry to Nainativu. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. The temple's annual festival falls in June or July. Allow two to three days.
Day-by-day sacred itinerary will be customized to your darshan schedule and arrival timings.
