About This Temple
Biraja Temple stands in Jajpur, Odisha, on the Baitarani river. Tradition holds that Sati's navel fell here, and the town is known as Biraja Kshetra and Nabhi Gaya. The goddess Biraja is a two-armed form of Durga, one foot on a lion and the other on the demon Mahishasura. The Tantra lists name the goddess Vimala, with Jagannath as her Bhairava. Pilgrims come to the Biraja Shakti Peeth for pinda daan as well. Jajpur is one of three Gaya sites in Hindu tradition.
