- Amarnath, Jammu and Kashmir
About This Temple
The Amarnath cave sits at about 3,880 m in the Himalaya above Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. It is best known for the ice lingam of Shiva that forms inside each summer. Tradition also counts it among the 51 as the place where Sati's throat fell. The goddess is Mahamaya, with Trisandhyeshwar as her Bhairava. A smaller ice formation beside the lingam is worshipped as Parvati. The Amarnath Shakti Peeth is open only during the annual yatra, usually in July and August.
