About This Temple

The Shri Shail Shakti Peeth, where tradition says Sati's neck fell, is identified with the Mahalakshmi temple at Joinpur, near Gotatikar in Sylhet district, Bangladesh. The goddess is Mahalakshmi, with Shambaranand as her Bhairava. The shrine stands on a low hill, or tilla, as such hills are called locally. It should not be confused with Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh. Indian pilgrims need a Bangladesh visa. The practical route from India is the Dawki-Tamabil land border in Meghalaya, about 85 km from Shillong. Sylhet city is about 55 km beyond the border. Sylhet also has an airport with domestic flights from Dhaka. Plan at least three days from Shillong, since border crossings take time. Check visa and border rules before you plan.

Day-by-day sacred itinerary will be customized to your darshan schedule and arrival timings.
