Vishnu Doul

Elegantly positioned along the northern bank of the vast royal Borpukhuri water reservoir in Sivasagar, Vishnu Doul is an architectural gem of the Ahom kingdom. Consecrated in 1734 CE by Queen Ambika Devi, the devout consort of King Siva Singha, the temple was built alongside the soaring Siva Doul to honor Lord Vishnu and reinforce Vaishnavite devotion across upper Assam. The structure is celebrated for its graceful Nilachal-influenced central sikhara adorned with refined horizontal fluting, detailed terracotta medallions, and decorative honeycomb brick masonry characteristic of the golden age of Ahom construction. Inside the calm sanctum sanctorum, priests conduct daily prayers before consecrated stone representations of Lord Vishnu and his divine incarnations. The sweeping grassy lawns fronting the tranquil expanse of the historic 130-acre reservoir provide a contemplative environment for devotees undertaking the Sivasagar heritage trail. The temple comes alive with extraordinary spiritual fervor during Janmashtami, Radhashtami, and Dol Purnima, when continuous devotional singing of Naam Kirtan and classical prayer melodies fills the cool evening river breeze across the royal waters.
