About This Journey

Umananda Temple is a beautiful Shiva temple located on Umananda Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati. The island is also known as Peacock Island. To reach the temple, visitors take a short boat ride from Guwahati. The present temple was built in 1694 during the rule of Ahom King Gadadhar Singha. The temple has old stone carvings and small shrines dedicated to different Hindu gods and goddesses. The peaceful river around the island makes the visit quite different from a usual city temple visit. Maha Shivratri is one of the main festivals celebrated here, and many devotees visit the temple during this time. Umananda Temple is a good place to include in a Guwahati trip along with Kamakhya Temple and other nearby places.
