Sukreswar Temple

Commanding a spectacular elevated position atop Itakhuli Hill on the southern banks of the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati, Sukreswar Temple is an esteemed 18th-century Shiva sanctuary. Commissioned in 1744 CE by the illustrious Ahom King Pramatta Singha, the temple houses one of the largest and most colossal stone Shiva lingams in all of India within its sanctum. Located adjacent to the historic Janardan Vishnu temple, the shrine complex forms an integral part of Guwahati's holy riverfront landscape. A long, picturesque flight of masonry steps descends directly from the temple precinct down to Sukreswar Ghat on the Brahmaputra, providing visiting devotees with panoramic views of Peacock Island and passing river ferries. Devotees visit daily to perform sacred milk abhishek on the gigantic lingam and conduct ancestral post-funeral rituals (Shradh) along the sanctified riverbanks. During the auspicious annual festival of Maha Shivratri, thousands of pilgrims queue throughout the night, chanting sacred Vedic stotras while lit earthen oil lamps illuminate the hill slope, casting radiant golden reflections across the expansive waters of the sacred river.
