Rudreswar Temple

Standing gracefully along the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River in North Guwahati, Rudreswar Temple is an 18th-century architectural marvel of the Ahom kingdom. Erected in 1749 CE by King Pramatta Singha to honor the hallowed memory of his father, the legendary monarch Swargadeo Rudra Singha, who passed away on this riverbank, the temple reflects a sophisticated amalgamation of Ahom masonry and contemporary Mughal aesthetic influences. The edifice is uniquely constructed upon an elevated, vaulted brick platform resembling an amphitheater, supported by underground arched chambers originally intended for strategic river defense and ammunition storage. A stone flight of steps ascends to the sanctum, where a consecrated Shiva lingam is enshrined beneath an inverted-lotus ribbed dome.
