Mahabhairav Temple

Dominating a panoramic hillock in the historic city of Tezpur within Sonitpur district, Mahabhairav Temple is among the most ancient and venerated Shiva pilgrimage sites in northeastern India. Legendary lore traces the original foundation of this sacred shrine to the mythical Asura King Banasura, a contemporary of Lord Krishna whose daughter Usha resided in ancient Sonitpur. The central sanctum houses a colossal, self-manifested living Shiva lingam formed from natural rock, which according to local tradition gradually expands in size over centuries. Reconstructed and fortified with sturdy stone-and-brick ramparts by consecutive Ahom monarchs, the temple complex features sculpted relief panels and a modern three-tiered tiered pagoda roof sheltering the inner sanctum. Pilgrims travel from across Assam and neighboring states to offer prayers, sacred bilva leaves, and pure milk to the mighty Mahabhairav lingam. During the grand annual festival of Maha Shivratri, a vibrant multi-day temple mela envelops the hillock, drawing enormous crowds of sadhus and spiritual seekers who celebrate through devotional hymns, night-long vigils, traditional rituals, community feasts, and sacred temple prasad.
