Kameshwar Temple

Situated on the gentle lower slopes of Madanchala Hill in the holy town of Hajo, Kameshwar Temple is a historic 18th-century sanctuary dedicated to Lord Shiva. Constructed in 1744 CE by the pious Ahom monarch King Pramatta Singha, the shrine commemorates the sacred mythological legend where Lord Shiva granted grace and restored physical form to Kamadeva, the god of love. The temple displays quintessential Ahom architectural craftsmanship, comprising an octagonal brick sikhara resting securely upon an older medieval stone plinth with ornate carved base moldings. In earlier historical centuries, Kameshwar was renowned across Assam as a thriving cultural center where dedicated Devadasi temple dancers performed classical temple dances during seasonal festivals. Devotees visit the peaceful sanctum to offer bilva leaves, fresh milk, and holy water to the enshrined Shiva lingam, seeking harmony in family life, emotional healing, and spiritual peace. During Maha Shivratri, the temple courtyard fills with devotees observing fasting vigils, offering deepam prayers, lighting lamps, and singing traditional devotional melodies beneath the starlit sky throughout the holy pilgrimage town of Hajo.
