About This Journey

Hayagriva Madhava Temple stands atop Monikut Hill in Hajo, about 30 km west of Guwahati. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his horse-headed Hayagriva avatar, this ancient stone temple holds deep reverence for both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Tibetan Buddhists revere this shrine as Mahamuni, believing Lord Buddha attained Parinirvana at this spot. Rebuilt in 1583 AD by King Raghudev Narayan of the Koch dynasty, the temple features intricate stone relief carvings of the ten avatars of Vishnu along its lower walls. A large ancient pond named Madhab Pukhuri sits at the hill base, home to giant black softshell turtles.
