Built in 1745 CE during the golden reign of Ahom King Pramatta Singha, the temple stands as a vital spiritual bastion of central Assam. The stone-built sanctum enshrines a masterfully carved black stone idol of Goddess Durga in her ferocious Mahishamardini form, depicting the ten-armed warrior goddess vanquishing the buffalo demon Mahishasura with her celestial trident. The temple grounds overlook the swirling currents of the river near the historic Kolia Bhomora Setu bridge, affording visiting pilgrims sweeping views of riverine islands and tea gardens.
