Garakhiya Dol

Located in the peaceful rural environs near Nazira town in Sivasagar district, Garakhiya Dol is an ancient Shiva temple carrying deep cultural roots in Ahom folk tradition. The origin of the shrine is rooted in a charming legend concerning local cowherd youths (known as Garakhiyas in Assamese), who spontaneously fashioned an altar and offered wild flowers to Lord Shiva while grazing their cattle in these meadows. Impressed by their genuine devotion, the renowned Ahom monarch King Rudra Singha subsequently constructed a permanent royal brick monument at the site between 1696 and 1714 CE. Architecturally, Garakhiya Dol features an unusual octagonal base supporting a slender, fluted sikhara crowned with a gold-plated kalasha spire, reflecting early experimental phases of royal Ahom brick masonry. Surrounded by emerald rice paddies and swaying betel nut groves, the temple maintains an atmosphere of tranquil village spirituality. Every year during Maha Shivratri, villagers gather from neighboring hamlets to clean the temple grounds, light earthen lamps, and perform devotional community prayers accompanied by traditional drums and resonant bronze temple bells.
