Doul Govinda Temple

Resting peacefully along the scenic slopes of the Chandrabharati hillock at Rajaduar in North Guwahati, Doul Govinda Temple is one of Assam's most cherished Vaishnavite pilgrimage shrines. Dedicated to Lord Krishna in his charming Govinda aspect, the sacred black stone deity was traditionally retrieved from the Sandhyachal hills and consecrated in the early twentieth century through the pious devotion of Ganga Ram Barooah. The temple complex is celebrated throughout the state for its serene spiritual atmosphere, stunning riverfront views across the Brahmaputra River, and the daily distribution of sanctified vegetarian Anna Prasada (bhog meal) to hundreds of gathered devotees. The spiritual zenith of Doul Govinda occurs during the grand five-day festival of Doul Utsav (Holi) in spring, when tens of thousands of pilgrims assemble from across northeastern India.
