About This Temple

Dirgheshwari Temple is an ancient Shakti shrine situated on Itakhuli Hill in North Guwahati. Revered as a Shakti Peetha, tradition states that a part of Goddess Sati's body fell on this hill. The stone temple structure was constructed between 1714 and 1744 AD by Ahom King Shiva Singha. Rock cut images of various deities and ancient inscriptions can be seen carved directly into the surrounding hill rocks. The temple grounds sit amidst green trees overlooking the Brahmaputra River. Annual Durga Puja celebrations here draw thousands of pilgrims from across Assam.
