About This Temple
Perched atop the verdant Dirgheshwari hill in North Guwahati, Dirgheshwari Temple is regarded as an exceptionally auspicious Shakti Peetha of northeastern India. According to ancient mythological lore from the Kalika Purana, after Goddess Sati gave up her life at Daksha’s sacrifice, her sacred body parts fell across the subcontinent, with an auspicious limb landing upon this sacred hillock. The current stone temple was commissioned between 1714 and 1744 CE under the devout patronage of Ahom King Siva Singha, who established royal land grants for its perpetual maintenance. Surrounding the sanctum are numerous ancient rock-cut reliefs representing Lord Ganesha, Goddess Durga, and divine celestial guardians etched directly into living granite boulders. Pilgrims trek up the scenic stone pathway through dense forest foliage to reach the sanctum and offer prayers before the consecrated rock imprint. The annual autumn Durga Puja is observed here with profound reverence, featuring age-old Vedic rituals, traditional sacrificial ceremonies, and vibrant gatherings of pilgrims seeking divine maternal protection, radiant health, family welfare, and long-lasting spiritual boons and divine inner tranquility.
