Billeswar Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva
About This Temple
Billeswar Devalaya stands at Belsor in Nalbari district, roughly 70 km north-west of Guwahati on the road toward Barpeta. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to have been consecrated around five hundred years ago. Local tradition recounts that a Brahmin, prompted by unusual occurrences at the spot, dug into a mound and uncovered a Shiva Linga. Villagers raised a math around the find and worship has continued there ever since. The name is properly Bilweswar, an Assamese compound of bilwa, the wood-apple sacred to Shiva, and iswar, meaning lord, so the name reads as Lord of the Wood Apple. Maha Shivaratri and Durga Puja are the principal festivals, and the Durga Puja observance at Billeswar retains old ritual practices that have largely disappeared elsewhere in the region. The temple is a quiet rural shrine rather than a crowded pilgrimage centre, which is much of its appeal for visitors travelling the lower Assam circuit.
